The Year 2026 Declared the Year of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a band of frogs is called an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Frogs are far from new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their popularity has noticeably increased in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are bona fide Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this rise, I performed a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The data paint a clear picture: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's rising status in the broader culture is partially apparent elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the explosion in gaming seems especially powerful.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Honestly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues enable a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year so far.
When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
