United Kingdom Broadens Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory Roster with Eleven Destinations

British government has added an additional eleven more countries to its public alert register concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol toxicity from tainted spirits.

This expanded advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "an international surge in the number of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Only a few weeks ago, authorities had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to several high-profile incidents such as the deadly demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as small amounts of methanol can lead to vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful chemical often used in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not designed for ingestion.

While it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.

But in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.

Government Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office representative Hamish Falconer said that all travellers should recognize the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.

"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, stick to well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," the minister said.

"Should anything seems unusual, like a fatigue that's much more severe than normal or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."

The entire roster of countries identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
